Dryland Training Study
Timing is everything.
A study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine looked at the
effect on runners of the order of performing strength and endurance
training.
They compared four groups: one doing
strength training immediately before endurance training (SE),
another group doing strength training immediately after endurance
training (ES), one group doing only strength training(S) and one
group doing only endurance training (E).
They found that strength training immediately after endurance
training (ES) resulted in a significantly greater improvement in
performance (4000 meter run) and in aerobic capacity (the
efficiency at which the body uses the oxygen in your blood) when
compared to the other groups.
The times for the 4000 meter run would be comparable to that of a
1500 meter swim. You and your coach may want to consider these
findings when planning the timing of your dryland
exercises.
